연쇄살인 사건의 혐의가 있는 용의자 마틴 씨일(Martin Thiel: 케빈 베이컨 분)의 변호를 맡아 승소한, 벤 체이스(Ben Chase: 게리 올드만 분)는 그가 진범일 거라는 의혹에 빠진다.
그런 회의을 느끼면서 정신적 방황을 할 때 체이스는 마틴으로부터 연락을 받는다.
제이스는 마틴 어머니가 중절 수술을 하는 모든 여자는 살인자로 판단, 여자를 차례로 죽여왔던 사실을 발견한다.
체이스는 마틴이 자기 어머니 마저 죽이는 것을 보고는 마틴을 없앨 기회를 노린다.
A rising young attorney successfully defends a man accused of murder, only to have the same type of murder then happen again.
Right away the previously defended man hires the attorney again, and although the attorney is quite certain that he is the killer, he agrees to again defend him…
much to the consternation of his friends.
However, he explains that by being his attorney he will be better able to catch the man in a mistake…
and on this the rest of the film develops, with the killer playing a cat and mouse game with the attorney until, at last, they both must recognize that they are not all that different.
